This month’s Member spotlight; we got to hear from Hive Engineering’s CEO and Senior Engineer, Andrea Kalafut, M.Sc.E., P.Eng

How many years have you been in this business?

16 years. I started in the consulting engineering business in California in 2005. I relocated to New Brunswick in 2007. After ten years of consulting in NB, I made the leap to start my own company. Hive Engineering has been incorporated since 2017. We are very excited about going into our fifth year in business in 2022.

Why did you join BOMA?

I initially joined because several of my friends, clients and colleagues were members. I didn’t know much about the organization. Since joining, I have had so many good times at events (December holiday event, golf events, etc.). It is about creating a community to expand and move New Brunswick and all of Atlantic Canada forward; new places to live and new places to work. I look forward to seeing everyone again soon in person!

 .

What's one thing - either industry-related or not - you learned in the last month?

I am a political junky. 66% of southern republicans in the US support succession from the union and 41% of Biden supports support succession from the union. As a dual citizen, I found this very interesting.

What educational or business experiences best prepared you for your career?

Honestly, making mistakes in the early years of my career taught me a lot. I also have done several courses discussing different personality types and how to work will people that think differently than you do. This was a very eye-opening experience for me. I have an engineering degree and do engineering work, but consulting is a people business. You have to know how to deal with people.

What advice would you give to professionals coming in to the commercial industry?

This is a fast-paced environment. Deadlines matter. Budgets matter. Common sense solutions matter. You have to be ready to rock and roll in this industry.

If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be and why?

Develop good habits and hang on to them.

What's your favourite movie and why?

Not much of a movie person. It’s boring but most of the time I watch the news or documentaries. I also love Game of Thrones, Star Wars series and Mandalorian.

If you could have dinner with someone famous (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

Rachel Carson.

How do you define success?

I think about success in two ways: 1. Freedom. Freedom to run my company the way that I want to; 2. Providing employment opportunities for individuals and seeing them grow as people and professionals.

Thank you, Andrea; it was great to hear from you!
