This month’s Member spotlight; we got to hear BELFOR Maritime - Business Development Manager, Jane Baxter
How many years have you been in this business?
8 years!
Why did you join BOMA?
I believe it’s important to be part of the community you’re working in. I enjoy people and their stories and learn through conversation. Plus, BOMA NB/PE social events are usually lots of fun, and listening to speakers and panels is something I love. BOMA membership helps keep me informed on what’s happening the industry and our region.
What's one thing - either industry-related or not - you learned in the last month?
Perhaps not learned but reminded – It’s never too late to learn something new, change a habit, or take on a new challenge.
What educational or business experiences best prepared you for your career?
In my twenties, I completed my undergrad in Quebec, worked at a golf club, a pool hall, and completed an international MBA. These experiences broadened my perspective of the world, business, and communication.
What advice would you give to professionals coming in to the commercial industry?
There are so many facets of the industry. Seek out and speak with as many people as possible about their experience, career path, opportunities, and state and direction of the industry. Ask about their companies and suppliers, current and future job openings, and what they would do if they were starting out.
If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be and why?
Focus on what you do well. Play to your strengths.
What's your favourite movie and why?
No particular favourite. A recent movie I loved is Champions. It’s about a team of young basketball players with intellectual disabilities. A heartwarming story and an exceptional cast.
If you could have dinner with someone famous (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
Anthony Bourdain. I love food and travel, and hope I’m an empathetic listener.
How do you define success?
My younger self may have responded “career advancement and wealth”. Now its “Happiness and being a good person”
Thank you, Jane; it was great to hear from you!
